Former Thermopolis resident, Ruth C. Mathews, 91, died Tuesday, September 11, 2018 in Riverton, Wyoming after a period of declining health.
Born August 6, 1927 in Berthoud, Colorado, she was one of 15 children of Christian “Chris” and Catherine (Braun) Hill.
On March 9, 1947 she married Melvin Hamilton “Mel” Mathews in Torrington, WY. To this union was born five children. The couple moved to Thermopolis in 1972 where Ruth was employed with Wyoming Gas for many years and various other businesses as a clerk.
She was a member of Community Federated Church. All her life she loved music and enjoyed singing in the church choir. She was an avid Bronco and Colorado Rockies fan. She also enjoyed gardenening.
Loved ones cherishing her memory include her children, Larry Mathews, Marilyn Jones, both of Riverton, and Bill Mathews of Thermopolis; twin sister, Rachel Schreiner of Torrington; eight grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a young daughter, Joyce Ellen; her husband, Mel; daughter Janis E. Mathews; and seven brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 20, 2 pm at the Community Federated Church with Rev. Chuck Cooper of Community Church, and Pastor Matt Gordon and Moderator Dennis Russell of the Torrington First Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be beside her husband, Mel, in the Valley View Cemetery in Torrington.
