John Junior Schmidt, Jr, 73, died suddenly at his residence in Red Lane, Thermopolis, April 23, 2017

Born December 10, 1943 in Rushville, Nebraska, he was the son of Walter and Margie (McGuire)  Schmidt. He grew up on a ranch near Hay Springs, NE until fourth grade when the family moved to Pine Bluffs, WY , then Mitchell, NE.

John entered the Army in 1965 serving in Vietnam and was discharged in 1971.  He was employed by Pathfinder Mines at Shirley Basin, WY until moving to Thermopolis in 1977.
As a private contractor, he established T & J Machine, a welding shop.

A member of the Elks BPOE 1746 he was the Exalted Ruler for one year.  An active Mason, John held many positions with the Masonic Lodge in Medicine Bow and Thermopolis including Royal Arch Mason, Knight Templar, Excellent High Priest, Eminent Commander, Education Councilor, and Most Illustrious Grand Master.  He was also a member of the VFW Post 2281.

Known as a private man, he was always busy. The last several winters were spent in Quartsite, AZ where he worked at the Mariquitia Gold Mine.

Survivors include his sisters, Virginia (Ronald) Moore of Casper and Vada (Chuck) Worrell of Scotts Bluff, NE; numerous nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be held at the Malta Lodge #17 AF&AM, 521 Arapahoe St. in the near future.   Mortimore Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
