Lois Dewey Obituary

Lois Virginia Dewey - August 24, 1934 - September 13, 2023

Lois was born to Robert and Helen Miller in Big Horn, Wyoming. She died on September 13, 2023 in Thermopolis, Wyoming.  She was married in December 1950 to Jerry Edward Dewey in Sheridan, Wyoming.  They moved to Washington State shortly afterward as Jerry was stationed at Fort Lewis Washington during the Korean War.  They separated in the mid 1980’s but she was a forever sister to Jerry’s siblings.

Lois worked with Jerry at Tepee Lodge after their return from Washington.  Later they lived in Sheridan for a number of years, then on to Casper, and eventually back to the Sheridan area.  Lois was employed by a nursery in Sheridan for a number of years, working in the greenhouse.

Lois was definitely a caretaker.  She moved to South Dakota to continue taking care of a long-time companion.  After his death she moved to Buffalo, Wyoming to care for her daughter Gina who had health problems.  She was there until Gina’s death in 2021.

Besides loving growing things, Lois was a talented musician.  She met Jerry when he joined her family’s small band and they played at events in the local area.  Her favorite instrument was the accordion, and she collected many over the years.  Even after moving to Thermopolis recently, she still had a few of her instruments with her.  She was also a pianist and for a time taught piano lessons.

A dog lover, Lois always had one or more in her household until her last move.

Jerry’s three youngest siblings were quite young when their mother died and Lois was at times exactly the support they needed as they navigated those early years.  An excellent cook we relished her home cooked meals. While living in Big Horn Lois and Jerry ran a restaurant in the former Broderick store where Jay worked for them. We have been separated by distance for many years but she will forever be in our hearts.

Lois is survived by her sister, Donna; nephew, Matthew Cook; some cousins in the Sheridan area; and family-in-law: Judy (Dewey) Bergh, Joyce (Dewey) Billings, and Jay Dewey.  She was predeceased by her parents, daughter Gina Dewey and former husband, Jerry Dewey.
