Marjorie Slack Obituary

Marjorie Lou Slack

1936 - 2026

Marjorie Lou Slack, 89, passed away on April 17, 2026 at the Thermopolis Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Thermopolis, Wyoming, after a short illness.

Marjorie was born in Thermopolis, Wyoming, on August 23, 1936, as the second child of five children born to Jess and Ruth Lawrence (Lucas).  She was raised in Thermopolis until her marriage to Conrad Mayfiled in 1952.  Marge and Con had four children and moved frequently.  They divorced in 1966.

While living in California Marge met and married Melvin Slack.  At that time they combined families and had one son together.  At no time were any of the children called step-kids.  They were always brother and sisters and “our kids”.

Marjorie enjoyed her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.  After her family, she enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, baking, and playing cards.

Marge and Mel moved their family to a 40 acre farm in Florence, MO, in 1972, so they could provide their children with a better life. After all the kids had graduated high school and moved away, Marge and Mel moved to Thermopolis in 1992.

Marge and Mel were proud of all their children, but especially proud of their military family, having at one time children in all branches of the military except Coast Guard.  This tradition has been carried on by two granddaughters, two great granddaughters and one great grandson.

Marjorie Slack was a member of the Community Federated Church in Thermopolis, WY.

Marjorie is survived by four children, Evelyn Holmes (Don), Huron, SD; Bruce Slack, Savannah, GA; Nancy Davies (Dave), Anaheim, CA; and Michael Slack, Lebanon, MO; 27 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, and 3 great great grandsons; one brother, Lucky Lawrence (Kate) of Wallace, ID; one sister, Wilma Snyder (James), Carthage, IL; numerous nieces and nephews and a Very Special Friend, she called daughter, Carol Bivens (Marton) of Thermopolis.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Melvin Slack; her parents; three sons, Roy Mayfield; Jack Mayfield; James (Skip) Slack, two daughters, Martha Mayfield and Peggy Slack; one granddaughter; one daughter-in-law; one brother, Jess Lawrence; and a sister, Patsy Lyle.

A Celebration of Life will be held on August 1, 2026. Details to be announced later.
