Michel Gordon Sutherland

Michel Gordon Sutherland was born October 5, 1947, in Worland Wyoming to Chancy and Iona Sutherland.  Mike and his brother, Steve, grew up on a farm near Ethete Wyoming and graduated from Lander High School.  He married out of high school and had a son, David.  He worked for various oil and gas companies in Wyoming prior to being drafted in 1970 for the US Army as a mechanized infantryman.  He was deployed to Germany for several years and out processed at Ft. Carson, Colorado in 1974 and relocated to Lander, Wyoming where he met and married Evelyn MacKearney and became stepfather to Ann Talmadge.

He worked a couple years for US Steel before becoming a patrolman for the Wyoming Highway Patrol in 1976 in Thermopolis, Hot Springs County, Wyoming.  Mike was respected, admired and adored by all in the community and loved his job.  After 30 years of service he retired in 2006.  Mike then worked for the Hot Springs County School District as a bus driver until 2023.  He also served as a Deputy Reserve for the Hot Springs County Sheriff’s Department.

Mike was a member of the American Legion in Lander, Malta Lodge #17 (Masonic Lodge) – Worshipful Master, Eastern Star – Worthy Patron, Kalif Shrine – Past Potentate, Elk’s Lodge in Hot Springs/Washakie Counties , The Royal Order of Jesters in Sheridan Wyoming and a Life time member of the NRA.

Mike enjoyed hunting, shooting, travel, exploring the countryside and collecting rocks, woodworking and family.

Michel passed away February 11, 2026 with his children by his side in Riverton, Wyoming.

He is survived by his brother, Steve Sutherland(Linda), son David Sutherland(Wendy), daughter, Ann Talmadge(Ben), six grandchildren – Brittany Lewis, Kaitlyn Sutherland, Oceana Flores, Michael Sutherland, Miranda Kornish and Gabrielle Kornish, five great grandchildren and one on the way, nieces and cousins. 

Gravesides services are at Monument Hill Cemetery, Wednesday,  February 18th at 2:00 pm in Thermopolis, Wyoming. In Lieu of flowers please give donations to the Masonic Lodge/Eastern Star.
